BECKLEY, W.Va. — Scotty Earnest entered the Upper Big Branch mine as a rescuer. Sunday afternoon, he turned on a mining light as its helmet rested atop one of 29 crosses — each representing a life lost in the April 5 explosion in Montcoal, W.Va.
